Homemade Sound Insulation

My homemade "Magic Fleece" works very well and is cheap to make. It is made from a dense and thin wall carpet scrap glued onto 2 ft. x 4 ft. 3/32" sheet cork bought at Ace Hardware for $12.99. The 2 ft. x 4 ft. cork will be enough to sound insulate a server case like the Antec 1030. I used Titebond yellow glue, but any white glue should work, and a vacuum bag veneer press. An alternate method would be a flat surface, 3/4" plywood and bricks. Put plastic under and over the cork-carpet sandwich so the plywood doesn't stick. Spread the glue thinly on both the carpet and cork, it will take about 2-3 cups total, and work quickly. Let dry overnight.

I cut the material with a sharp mat knife and used waterbase contact cement to glue carpet-cork inside the case.

Much of the sound also escapes from the front of the Antec style case. There is room in front to add the carpet-cork right behind the plastic grill and not impede air flow. While at the hardware store pick up a furnace filter for $1.00 and cut a piece to fit between the grill and the intake fans to keep dust out of your case.
